About Glyndebourne

The renowned opera house Glyndebourne is a mile away from Spiral’s premises so it was particularly agreeable when the Christie family asked the company to produce a stair for production of Pelleas et Melisande. This was particularly challenging job because as a piece of the stage set it was necessary for this stair be movable, which given its size and weight is quite a tall order. Another distinctly theatrical touch is the inclusion of slot in the handrail which is lined with asbestos rope that the crew dowses in methylated spirits and set alight to create a ribbon on fire.
